Common Questions

I've never done martial arts before. Can I still book a session?

Absolutely. Many of my students start with no previous experience at all. Private coaching is one of the best ways to learn because everything is taught at your pace, with plenty of time to ask questions and build confidence before joining larger classes if you choose.

What should I wear?

For your first session, comfortable sports clothing is all you need – such as a t-shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottoms. If you decide to continue training, I'll be happy to advise you on the right equipment and uniform.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

Not at all. Martial arts help you become fitter over time. Sessions are tailored to your current ability, and we'll work at a pace that's challenging but enjoyable.

What age groups do you coach?

I work with teenagers and adults, as well as children through private coaching where appropriate. Sessions are always adapted to the student's age, experience and individual goals.

What happens during my first lesson?

Your first session is all about getting comfortable. I'll chat about your goals, introduce some basic movement and techniques, and work through the fundamentals at a pace that suits you. There's no pressure to know anything before you arrive.

Can I book lessons with a friend or family member?

Yes. Small group coaching is a great option for friends, siblings, training partners or parents and children who want to learn together while still receiving personalised coaching.

What martial arts do you teach?

Tora Coaching specialises in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). Coaching is tailored to your interests and objectives, whether that's learning the fundamentals, improving your competition skills or simply improving confidence.

What are the benefits of private coaching?

Private lessons allow us to focus entirely on you. Whether you're learning from scratch, preparing for competition or looking to improve specific areas of your game, every session is designed around your individual strengths, weaknesses and goals.

Where do sessions take place?

Coaching takes place at Team Ryano Causeway, based in Score Football Centre, Coleraine, where we have access to a fully equipped martial arts training facility.

Do you offer block bookings?

Yes. Four-session coaching blocks are a popular option for students looking to make consistent progress. Training regularly over several weeks allows us to build on each session and create a structured development plan. Chat to Coach Francis to arrange these.

How do I book a lesson?

Simply visit the Book Online page to choose a suitable session, or get in touch if you'd like to discuss your goals before booking. I'm always happy to answer any questions.

Can private coaching help if I'm already attending regular classes?

Definitely. Many students use private sessions to work on specific techniques, troubleshoot areas they're finding difficult, or prepare for competitions. It's an excellent way to complement your regular training and accelerate your progress.

I'm a bit nervous about starting. Is that normal?

Completely. Almost everyone feels a little nervous before their first session. My aim is to create a relaxed, supportive environment where you can ask questions, learn at your own pace and enjoy the process. You'll never be expected to know more than you do, and everyone starts somewhere.
